ELISSA CRISTALL GALLERY is pleased to present an exhibition of “New & Recent Work” by Vancouver based artist Randall Steeves.
Steeves’ recent paintings are made up of abstract arrangements of fundamental human marks: the fingerprint. Straightforward and simple at first, a closer look reveals surfaces that are layered and scraped, worked and reworked until they begin to reveal a complexity that suggests the complexity of nature.
Working in encaustic (beeswax and pigments), Steeves’ paintings boldly embrace chance and celebrate the unpredictable character of this difficult medium. The Gallery presented four of these paintings at this summer’s Seattle Art Fair. The fair hosted 100 exhibitors and 22,500 visitors and Steeves’ paintings struck a chord with the audience. Photos of the work appeared in the international press and were featured by Seattle Art Fair among “some of our favourite images from opening night”.
