Nicole Brasseur’s thesis exhibition, entitled a chronic invisibility, uses mixed media sculptures and installations to reflect on her lived experiences with chronic pain. She hopes that by creating artwork that articulates her suffering with an invisible chronic illness, she can create space for those in the disability community to be heard and seen.
Carly Morrisseau acknowledges their mother, Diana Morrisseau, whose knowledge of the N dialect of the Cree language has been instrumental in the creation of their exhibition titled Nitayānān Kīyāpic Ōta which translates to We’re Still Here. They create digital art to connect back to their cultural identity.
Morrisseau says about their series Continuum that it is “arranged in a linear format that uses color to create cyclical time, in that there are no definite beginnings or endings. These experiences have provided a connection to my cultural identity as an Indigenous person and this idea guides my art practice as I continue to make artwork inspired by my culture and my lifelong goal of learning the Cree language.”
Finally, Faith Rae’s exhibition titled Evolving explores her process of accepting her queer identity. She primarily works with mixed media, using surrealist imagery and unconventional materials to further reflect on the experiences of fear and anxiety, internal shame, and finally acceptance of being a queer woman.
The opening reception for Reclaiming Our Narratives will be held in person on May 26th at 7:00 P.M. AGSM curator Lucie Lederhendler will host a roundtable with the artists on the AGSM’s virtual platforms on Saturday, June 4th at 12:00 P.M. local time.
