Chernoff Fine Art is pleased to present a solo exhibition of recent work by Vancouver-based artist Holly Marie Armishaw. Repressions embodies a unique approach to the formal qualities of the photographic medium while simultaneously provoking socio-political discussion. Each of the photographs in the series depicts a partial view of a young woman either releasing various objects, in a play between 2D and 3D objects, or interacting directly with frame. The frames are not mere formal devices in this series, but active participants in the minor performances of the artworks. The subjects engagement with the photographic surface connotes a consciousness of the confines of the medium. Viewed collectively, one is able to piece together a unifying thematic thread beyond the formal qualities of the work through symbols of femininity, fragility and anger. The more “active” works suggest states of struggle, desperation, isolation, and even violence as the woman confronts the invisible boundaries of feminine existence.
