Artist Statement
“As a painter, I play with composition, colour, gesture, and expression to build a relationship between the viewer and the painting. My current body of work plays with images pulled from the long running television series Antiques Roadshow. The tv show focuses on people bringing a variety of objects to a panel of experts who proceed to assess the monetary, historical, cultural, and/or sentimental value of them. I began working on my roadshow series in 2019 as it provided an ideal place in which to explore the psychosocial drama of human interaction. As I continue to work with this subject, I am focusing on the universal experiences we have as social creatures. I select moments that present people interacting as they are particularly poignant and relevant to our common experience. The roadshow paintings examine a wide variety of people coming together with a common purpose but with very distinct baggage, hopes, and personalities. Visually, the stills offer all the compositional and narrative qualities I explore in my work, the figure, social interaction, and pictorial space.”
