Ronald Boaks, "What Are You Afraid Of?" acrylic on canvas, 39" x 39"
There is But One Rule features new works from Ronald Boaks’ Spirit Arise series in which he aims to convey a “lightness of being” through paint. Both formal and expressive, each of Boaks’ abstract canvases evokes a different mood through his playful use of colour and composition. The central focus remains the white cloud-like spirit entity, reimagined in each painting, rising up from earthly symbols like the X and Y coordinates, calligraphic mark, or symbolic painter’s palette. Inspired by the inescapable experience and knowledge of death, these paintings celebrate the essence of life and freedom of being alive in this moment.
Born in Newmarket, Ontario, Ronald Boaks has been exhibiting for more than 30 years. He is best known for his bold expressive canvasses that celebrate colour and surface as much as they define his ongoing search for balance and beauty. His paintings draw on personal memory and history as inspiration because for Boaks, the activity of art-making is always a road to self-discovery, anchored in the richness of the past.
