Celestial Bodies is an exploration of animals moving through the cosmos, interacting with planets, galloping away with fabric torn from star fields, and playing catch with moons.
There is a kinship between the magical, shamanist world of Sandra Storey’s animal sculptures and Linda Leon’s printed and painted animal images. This connection led the two artists to collaborate on this exhibit.
“It has been a thrill to partner with Sandra on this show, as I find her work deeply inspiring,” Leon said. “When Sandra and I first contemplated a two person exhibition, the challenge we gave ourselves was to create work where animals interacted with spheres. This led to many interpretations – planets, stars, galaxies, soccer balls, and bubbles that could also be moons. That Sandra and I, without planning it, ended up visualizing heavenly bodies is an example of how sympatico our art practices are.”
“I have always been inspired by Linda’s playful and mysterious depiction of animals, and I am delighted to exhibit with her, invoking the theme of night skies, planets, suns and moons,” Storey said. “I am surprised at how similar the finished work is. Bears, otters, rabbits and salmon arrived to us without consultation. This is magic! The show is a tribute to hope, wonder and connection…things that keep me inspired and moving towards the light.”
“Then here, in the lonely tundra nightof utter blackness – the stars! Infinite stars.”
