Saudade is the organizing theme for this work, a unique Portuguese word that has no immediate translation in English. Roughly stated, it refers to a longing, a melancholy, a desire for what was or what could be –to be someplace anywhere but the present.
In this new body of photographic works, Burdeny leaves architectural images and returns to landscapes, photographing them as a sort of dream state where one floats above and wonders through, with no prescribed destination. When figures appear, they are objectified in his images, neither of this world or another but in between. The photographs have been collected by the artist over a 6-year period in Iceland, China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Japan, USA and Brazil, chronicling a landscape that shifts from primitive and raw to one of escape and beauty.
