Artist Statement

Making a way through the thicket of visual information, my imagery largely references North American landscape meanwhile consciously distills aesthetic and philosophical inspirations from traditional Chinese landscape (Shan Shui) painting, which is often abstract, symbolic and with quality of serenity and sublimeness. My recent works in oil and acrylic continue to explore unique vocabulary to visually reflect on my examination of the inner rhythms and conflicts within nature itself, and to present a poetic yet stylized world under a broad umbrella of abstractive landscape.

Pushing beyond the obvious, my works strive to capture the essential forms in an intuitive way without losing the complexity and ambiguity of existence and nature. Central to my art making process is the curiosity about how to bring a hyperreal sense of colour, suggestive brushwork and expressive flatness to a place that opens another level of space or immersion which continues to change and evolve.

Painting simply helps me to seek balance in a chaotic time, and gain new perspective towards our surroundings.

Biography

Currently living and working in Greater Vancouver, Simone Guo was born in China to an artist’s family and practiced Chinese brush painting in childhood.  She studied at Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, China where she completed a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Art History, and in 2004, earned another Master of Art History degree from the University of Victoria.  She has had a number of solo exhibitions and has participated in many group exhibitions in North America and Asia, and her work is represented by Art Beatus Gallery, VisualSpace Gallery in Vancouver BC, and Art Rental & Sales at Vancouver Art Gallery.

Guo's recent body of work in oil and acrylic continues to explore unique vocabulary to visually interpret her understanding of nature and land, presenting a poetic yet stylized landscape world that reflects on personal history and memories, communal sentiments, even a much broader cultural reference.
