Small Treasures 2022
Opening 10:00 am, PST Saturday, January 29
A new year, a new location and a new collection of fun and fabulous artworks works in the form of our 19th annual Small Treasures exhibition. Again this year the Inuit Gallery of Vancouver invites you to peruse the collection which features a range of sizes, from miniature to hand-sized. There are works from across the Arctic, including Kinngait (Cape Dorset), Qamani'tuaq (Baker Lake), Arviat, Salliq (Coral Harbour), Sanikiluaq, Nunavik, and many others. This year's exhibition holds an impressive collection of vintage works, including artwork by Thomas Suvaaraq, Johnny Inukpuk, Ada Eyetoaq, and Sarah Iquliq among others.
You will find works by favourite artists such as Ningeosiak Ashoona, the late Etulu Etidloie, Markoosie Papigatok, Pitseolak Qimirpik and Johnnysa Mathewsie. Of course there are many others, including elegant walking bears by Tim Pee or Quaraq Nugusuituk; a terrific diving walrus by Pudlalik Shaa; and a collection of delicate flying birds by Kellipalik Etidloie. We are pleased to include works by Mathew Flaherty and Sam Akesuk who are emerging artists and keeping Inuit art traditions flourishing.
There are wonderful examples of birds, bears, muskox, fish and many other arctic animals and several sculptures of figures engaged in traditional activities, all in a variety of materials including stone, antler, muskox horn and ivory (please bear in mind that some materials such as whalebone and ivory cannot be shipped outside Canada).
