Sophie DeFrancesca: Cosmic Confetti opening Saturday, June 4th from 2-4pm.
Sophie DeFrancesca’s new body of work Cosmic Confetti began with new technology that allowed her to custom design and laser cut both simple and intricate forms out of fluorescent acrylic (plexiglass). Each piece of acrylic within DeFrancesca’s artwork starts as a custom designed file, that is then individually laser cut by a machine. Hand-made wooden frames and metal loops are used to connect and carefully assemble the finished acrylic pieces. During DeFrancesca’s process, the idea of assembling these pieces to form abstracted space objects was born. Including wall-mounted and free-standing sculptures of varying sizes, Cosmic Confetti was ultimately created through countless hours of research and development, as well as a keen respect and fascination with nature and the vast cosmos.
Speaking on her new body of work:
"Recent lockdowns and restrictions inspired many to venture outdoors into the refuge of nature. Away from the noise and bright lights of the city, one can soak up the peace and splendor of a natural environment. When gazing up into the night sky, I am humbled by the magnificence of it all.
With countless stars visible, they appear endless, yet we are only seeing a tiny sliver of what is actually out there. Asteroids, comets and meteors twinkle in the night sky. Lightning storms sometimes illuminate the heavens, but much of what we witness cannot be explained. The night sky is full of mystery.
After a two-year global hibernation of sorts, the world is waking up to a new reality, one that each of us plays a role in creating. I believe are here to test the boundaries of our imagination, our understanding of this life, as well as our place within it."
Sophie DeFrancesca was born in Toronto and graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD). She has exhibited and her work has bee collected widely across North America and abroad. DeFrancesca’s work has been included in Elle Magazine, Art Rubicon, and The Toronto Star, to name a few.
