Marlene Kallstrom-Barritt describes the series called Ascending, as "having a foundation in realism but gives a big nod towards abstraction. The hues in each scene are outlined in ink to purposefully acknowledge of how simple individual colours contribute to the painting as a whole. Little "bubbles" of thankfulness can be found in each painting, and these “bubbles" rise upward; hence, the name. It’s as though the mountains and the hills are thankful for the warm sunshine, thirst-quenching rain and nutritious soil, and so, they burst into song.”
