"Spring at a Stream"
Peder Monsted, "Spring at a Stream," oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right "P. Monsted 1898." Size15.75"h x 21.75"w (with frame 23.25" x 23.25").
In the late 18th and early 19th centuries landscape painters became influenced by the Romantic Movement circulating throughout Europe; although it was not a cohesive movement it was generally marked by creative explorations of emotions, irrational thought, and personal experience. As a result, this romantic approach to landscape painting rejected many traditional methods of art instruction and relied instead upon the artist’s intuitive response to the observable world. With an emphasis on calm bodies of water, artists in this exhibition captured the distinctive feeling of serenity created when one observes lush, peaceful and secluded scenery. Includes works by Peder Monsted, Arnold Marc Gorter, Frederik J.A. Winther and many others. Showing alongside this exhibition is a selection of fine antiques and objet d’art.
Open Tuesday-Saturday 10am to 5pm or by appointment. The first building on the south end of the Granville Street Bridge at the beginning of South Granville’s Gallery Row, 2117 Granville Street, phone 604-736-8825 www.langmann.com. (Wheelchair accessible).
