Paul Kuhn Gallery presents an exhibition of new paintings by Canadian artist, Stu Oxley. Oxley’s paintings are minimal in genre. He works with pastels, charcoal and layers of colour to produce lyrically abstract images. His lines and colours range from crayon like scribbles, to minute dashes and spiral shapes. The markings, while seemingly random and intuitive, belie their careful consideration. Each mark is deliberate, rendered with precision and force.
Oxley is intrigued with the nature of mark making itself: their weight, size, placement, and association to the natural world. The artist seems to be trying to get under the surface of things, creating paintings that are both evocative and contemplative.
Oxley’s work is represented in public and corporate collections across Canada including: Canadian Pacific, Imperial Oil, Nova Alberta Corporation, Esso Canada, Bank of Montreal, Nickle Arts Museum, London Regional Art Gallery, Art Gallery of Ontario, University of Guelph, Wilfred Laurier University, Queen’s University and St. Mary’s University.
