Doug Rowed and Susan Loudon continue their journey of exhibitions. Covering 40 years of art making, this fifth show has Doug Rowed displaying works in the large gallery space and Susan Loudon in the White Rabbit Room. The main gallery buzzes with expressionistic large canvases created in the 1980s. City scenes, with dramatic overtones. Plus figurative paintings wrought with timely zeitgeist. The phrase ‘thermographic x-rays’ comes to mind! Bold, action filled brushwork carves through thick, richly applied layers of color and temperament, with sensitivity and mood flavouring the works.
Susan Loudon, "untitled," 1980s, acrylic on hardboard
The White Rabbit Room contains works from Susan Loudon, and is dominated by a full wall, covered in a paper painting, inviting the viewer to look through a ‘looking glass’ window and swim into a world of open doors and dreaming possibilities. Extending the ideas derived from within this large piece, smaller paintings cover the rest of the walls in the room. One pairing of two pieces records an image painted in the 1980s, then a similar topic depicted 40 years later, using a printmaking technique, and showing the similar iconography with growth and expansion of the idea.
