Susan Turner's Spheres and Lens speaks of energy and play by exploring circular and vertical motion, pattern, colour, and repetition. They are comprised of framed prints on paper, and Tabernacle is comprised of prints on perforated vinyl.
Spheres and Lens are square images. Turner created them by observing forms in nature such as leaves, drops of water, and insects as well as observing mechanical objects, typography and household items. She printed these two series on a large format inkjet printer with archival inks on heavy weight, Hahnemuhle German Etching paper. It is reminiscent of the traditional papers used for hundreds of years by artists for etching and lithography.
Tabernacle is five artworks printed on alternate printing substrates such as vinyl, silk and mylar. These materials can be affected by the movement of air, a quality that ties in with Turner’s conceptual interests in change, vulnerability, and impermanence. The images are based on ceremonial fabrics and iconic biblical symbols. The pieces counter familiar and intimate experiences that viewers may have had with the symbols depicted. Turner transforms the symbols into a visual metaphor that acts as pathways for reflection, for the interpretation of imaginings and sensations, for musing on invented realities and for wanderings into memory.
Turner’s works all involve experimental/poetic ideas that employ an idiosyncratic voice as well as the animation of materials and objects. Her artworks are explorations of time, memory, identity, and psychological states.
