Susanne Hausermann, "Artist in the Window," 2021
Yukon Artists at Work is proud to present another series of Artist in the Window residencies, funded by On Yukon Time.
Fabric artist Susanne Hausermann has enjoyed playing with paper since she was a child. As an adult, she loves sewing with it.
“It has always fascinated me. These days I like to ‘rough it up’. That softens the fibres andmakes it easier to sew,” Hausermann said.
Paper is just one of the materials Hausermann will be using during her Artist in the Window residency at Yukon Artists at Work in Whitehorse later this month. She’ll be working in the gallery’s front window from August 25 – 28, 11 am to 2 pm each day. The public is invited to come see her create.
Hausermann will also make art with old jeans and CDs.
“I love the shiny nature of CDs, especially when they are held up to the light,” she said. “I havesome ideas about how I want to use them, but at this point it will be a big experiment to see what works. I am hoping to incorporate mirrors in some way.”
As for the jeans, Hausermann will cut them into strips, reinforce them with zigzag stitching, and knit the strips together.
“I have so many pairs of old jeans and I don’t want to just throw them out,” Hausermann said. “Using them in my art seems the natural thing to do.”
The pieces she creates during her time in the window will be included in a group exhibit called“Experienced Materials” that will run throughout September at the Yukon Artists at Work gallery.
Yukon Artists at Work is a non-profit society that hosts a gallery located at 4th and Wood in Whitehorse. It is run completely by the artists and provides opportunities for the public to meet and interact with them, watch the artists work, and purchase high quality pieces of art.
