Takao Tanabe has been a leading figure in Canadian art for over sixty years. Taking the landscape as his primary subject, his paintings are dominated by strong horizons and large swaths of water and sky.
Tanabe describes his interest in the BC landscape: "The West Coast has its bright, clear days, where all is revealed, but I favour the grey mists, the rain-obscured islands and the clouds that hide the details. However much we desire order and clarity in all the detail of our lives, there are always unexpected events that could cloud and change our course. Life is ragged. The Coast is like that, just enough detail to make it interesting, but not so clear as to be banal or overwhelming."
Tanabe has received honourary doctorates from Emily Carr University of Art + Design and the University of Lethbridge, The Order of British Columbia (1993), the Order of Canada (1999), the Governor General's Visual and Media Arts Award (2003), and the Audain Prize for Lifetime Achievement in the Visual Arts (2013). His work is included in many private and public collections, including the Tate Museum (UK), Cleveland Museum, Edmonton Art Gallery, Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal, Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Art Gallery of Ontario, Glenbow Museum, and the National Gallery of Canada.
