Guy Maddin and Evan Johnson will join Alison Gillmor in conversation on January 12, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. in Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall to discuss the role of the archive in their film Séances and other works by this filmmaking team. Gallery 1C03 is partnering with the University Library to present Séances, as well as a small selection of Maddin's collages. These works will be shown in the Hamilton Galleria located on the 4th floor mezzanine level of the Library from January 12th-Feburary 18th.
Séances, a film/art installation by Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, Galen Johnson, and the National Film Board, is a unique film experience rooted in the lost movies of the silent era. Maddin and the Johnson brothers have reimagined fragments of these lost films and made them available on the NFB’s Seances website. The viewer reassembles the fragments in a random configuration of a narrative that will only be seen this one time. So put on the headphones, click and hold the mouse, resurrect your unique “lost” film, and enjoy this viewing experience for the first and only time.
Accompanying the film is a selection of cinematic collages created by Guy Maddin. Maddin has referred to his collages as “therapeutic” and can serve as an opportunity for him to experiment with imagery for his films. The collages selected for this exhibition are evocative of fragmented storyboards - randomly assembled like those one might imagine exist for the “lost” films of Seances. Maddin’s collages are on loan from Lisa Kehler Art + Projects where they are available for purchase.
