The BIG Idea
A Visual Exploration of Contemporary Culture & Obesity, curated by Julian Forrest
Opening Reception: Thursday, June 21 from 7 - 9 pm
Responding to issues ranging from the cyborg, the medicalization of the body, the obesogenic environment, the psychological complexity of obesity, body and boundaries or obesity and space, to positions on consumption and consumerism, or the “super-sized”, The BIG Idea features ten artists from across Canada, the United States, and the UK.
Working within a range of media, including installation, performance, video, audio, sculpture, print-based media, and photography, these artists offer divergent viewpoints on the subject of obesity. Curator Julian Forrest hopes the work will bring new perspectives to the subject that challenge, support, and hopefully broaden the dialogue surrounding obesity, and perhaps foster opportunities for future multi-disciplinary collaborations.
This exhibition was organized in conjunction with the third Canadian Obesity Student Meeting, hosted at the University of Alberta. The conference brings together over 200 students and new professionals representing academia, industry, government, and non-profit organizations. The third COSM represents a partnership between the Canadian Obesity Network, Universite Laval, and the University of Alberta.
Noted American performance artist, writer and sociologist, Kimberly Dark, will open both the exhibition and COSM conference by giving several short presentations. Her Peter Robertson Gallery performance will occur at 7:30 pm, on Thursday, June 21.
