Colours of Joy
Anne-Marie Harvey, SFCA and Robyn Lake met doing what they love the most - painting in nature. They began a wonderful friendship and both paint and play music together. Although their styles differ, they share a love of subject matter. By van or by bicycle, they travel around together painting and exploring the landscape and the culinary delights of the Okanagan. From small plein-air sketches to very large studio acrylics and oils, more than forty paintings will be on display from June 12 to July 12th at the Naramata Heritage Inn. Robyn Lake: "I have always felt joyful when I paint, regardless of subject matter, but especially the Okanagan landscape around me, and I express that with colour and brush. I was born in the tropics where all the colours in the landscape are so intense and this has remained with me. I admire the Okanagan's luscious sun-lit grape vines and the late summer yellow foreground grasses in contrast with the dry desert hills. I feel a deep sense of gratitude and joy, and the brilliant colours I use are an expression of this: I want people to feel a sense of this joy when they look at my work.
Anne-Marie Harvey, SFCA: Painting is a way of connecting with the world around me. Light, colour and movement are my inspiration. I am particularly intrigued with the randomness of Mother Nature, and seek to express her joy and freedom in my paintings. Although I have played with many mediums and techniques, big brushes and interesting brush strokes seem to be my best tools so far.
