Doris Wall Larson, "Meewasin Trail: River Walk #1," 2001, wood, casein, colour photograph. Collection of the Mendel Art Gallery.
The Home Show, drawn from the permanent collection of the Mendel Art Gallery, explores a populist impulse, manifest in the rise of crowdsourcing and the many participatory activities on the web. Gallery staff members and volunteers were invited to join in the curatorial process. Each participant selected a work from the permanent collection to reflect the notion of “home.” This collaboratively driven exhibition looks at institutional transparency and levels of engagement. What does access to a permanent collection mean? How do personal taste and experience inform a selection process? What does it mean to curate? The exhibition is organized by Associate Curator Sandra Fraser.
