The New Gallery is thrilled to announce the opening of "THE IMPOSSIBLE BLUE ROSE: Chapters I-V & madness …", a video installation by multidisciplinary artist, Lisa Lipton. Filming six video chapters in locations across North America, Lipton addresses the patriarchal ideologies associated with drumming, skateboarding, and other male-dominated subcultures.

Lipton draws narrative from the various interactions experienced in each location and creates each of her protagonists through these occurrences. Identities emerge against the backdrop of the protagonists’ surroundings and are channeled into site–specific installations, challenging hetero-normative ideas. The artist chronicles these events within a dreamscape, consisting of costumes, paintings, and sculptures, all anchored by live drumming performances, as a means of highlighting the reality in which each chapter exists.

The opening will coincide with Lipton’s experimental, multimedia performance, "Signed, Your Loving Secret Admirer", presented in collaboration with Sled Island Music Festival. Moving between dual venues, the #1 Legion (basement) and The New Gallery, "Signed, Your Loving Secret Admirer" features simultaneous film screenings, live drumming performances, musical embellishment and character reenactments. Emerging from an extensive road trip and solo drum journey across North America, "Signed, Your Loving Secret Admirer" bridges the psychological depths of travel with a revolving world of impossible blues, blast beats, broken dreams and romance driven to madness. Follow the choreographed gestures of love and hate, hope and fear, frustration and rage, in a movement that will challenge viewers to go the distance and follow one beat to get to the next.

Lipton is an interdisciplinary artist, musician, and director from the Maritimes, who received her BFA from NSCAD University in 2003. She was later awarded an MFA from the University of Windsor. Lipton recently completed a major tour throughout North America with her drumming project, BLAST BEATS: Phase Three, which has culminated in her first feature film, THE IMPOSSIBLE BLUE ROSE. She has exhibited her work nationally and internationally, and is currently serving as the Shortlist representative for the Maritime Provinces within the Sobey Art Awards.
