Displacements and Recollections is the new body of work by Canadian painter, Tim Merrett. Based in Peterborough, Ontario, Merrett’s work has appeared in exhibits in various Canadian and American cities, as well as commercial and private collections throughout Asia, Europe, Canada and the USA.
Merrett’s work continues to focus on the appropriation of images derived from the masters of Romanticism juxtaposed within modern contexts.
“Being drawn to the history of art is somewhat hard-wired for me,” says Merrett. “I am always seeking historical references, markers, departure points as a means of understanding things around me and my relationship to them.”
While the subjects of Merrett’s work remains consistent, the “dig” of these masterful paintings has become deeper over time.
“I appropriate historical images not simply to re-position or re-interpret them, but to utilize them in hopes of revealing a sense of clarity or yearning; the colour fields and photographic components creating a sense of tension - pushing and pulling at the appropriated image.”
Merrett apprenticed under renowned artists, David Bierk, which consisted of daily study of the artistic techniques that he mastered from 1996-2001.
