Traveling Women: Paintings by Kwan S. Yu
October 23 - November 19, 2012
Opening Reception: Tuesday October 23, 7-9 pm
Artist Talk: Sunday November 11, 2 pm
Kwan S. Yu will discuss his ‘Traveling Women’ series and reveal how it informs his new work.
‘Traveling Women’ brings us portraits of female transit riders (as they sleep, yawn, stand or jostle for a seat) rendered in luscious oil stick, oil paint, and encaustic. Surreptitiously photographed and then painted by artist Kwan S. Yu, the women all share a blank expression that will be familiar to anyone who rides Skytrain, bus, or Seabus. Yu is drawn to these women specifically because their faces don’t give anything away -- allowing him, and his audience, to imagine what their lives are like and what stories they might tell their friends. ‘Traveling Women’ encourages viewers to reflect on the lives that they live alongside their neighbours; often physically close, but not at all connected.
The Seymour Art Gallery is a non-profit, public, community gallery located in the heart of Deep Cove, North Vancouver.
