AVALANCHE! Institute of Contemporary Art is proud to present Ville Fantȏme, an exhibition of new works by Calgary-based artists Cassandra Paul and Slavek Pytraczyk.
Through both a literal and metaphorical consideration of a ghost town, Ville Fantȏme explores themes of abandonment & isolation, and the relationships one shares with the environments and people that surround them. Pytraczyk's photo-based works depict commuters on crowded tramways in Kraków, Poland; a mundane and repetitive activity that often makes one feel isolated, despite being surrounded by others, while Paul's sculpture of a pristine, untouched playground carousel considers literal abandonment, evoking a sense of nostalgia through a decaying monument of the youth of her own generation.
