Whess Harman: chew the bones, they’re soft
The title of Whess Harman’s upcoming exhibition, chew the bones, they’re soft, is something that sounds metal and hardcore, but is rooted in a need for tenderness.
Referring to the process of jarring salmon wherein the vertebrae bones soften and become easily edible, this is a phrase you’ll hear with warm eagerness as you’re urged to join in a meal. In this spirit, the exhibition has been shaped through the ethos of Potlatching; practices of governance, wealth and redistribution, invitation and collaboration. Though headlined as a solo exhibition, the forthcoming publication, zine library and new works include friends and collaborators who’ve shaped Whess’ practice while in the urban context on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh; land which has graciously held these relations.
