William Laing and Janet Lowry: Between Earth and Sky
William J. Laing was born in Glasgow, Scotland and immigrated to Canada in 1960. He studied at the Vancouver School of Art then at Brighton Polytechnic in England and then received his Masters Degree from the Royal College of Art in London, England in 1974. From 1974 to 1977, Bill Laing was an instructor in Printmaking, Photography, and Design at the Alberta College of Art. In 1977 he became a faculty member at the University of Calgary, teaching for almost 40 years and is now Professor Emeritus. Williams' silkscreen prints have a beautiful, delicate organic quality that expresses his deep connection to the environment. Not only a master at 2 D printmaking, William also enjoys the 3 dimensional sculptural printmaking process, using wood, plexi, found objects, etc.
Janet Lowry graduated in 1992 with honors from the Alberta College of Art and Design, Fine Arts program. Janet gravitated to the process of printmaking during her time at art college and immersed herself in the creative development of etching and chine colle (which is a special technique in printmaking, in which images are transferred to a surface that is bonded to a heavier support in the printing process). This passion and technical prowess forged Janet's way to being a pivotal pillar in the Prairie printmaking community. Janet's work can be viewed as abstract landscapes and were created responding to the environments she found herself in and her love of nature.
