The Art Gallery of St. Albert is pleased to present a ground-breaking exhibition that celebrates the lives of women who have the courage to stand before power, and be heard. Edmonton artist Shana Wilson’s For Women Who Roar will run in the Gallery’s main exhibition space starting on March 24.
Wilson’s inner-drive as an artist ignited when the #metoo and #timesup social justice movements were gaining exposure in late 2017. Heartbroken by the endless first-hand accounts of mistreatment, harassment and marginalization from women and girls around the world, Wilson poured her anger, sadness and frustration into her work. As an ongoing form of activism, Wilson creates portraits that honour the power and agency of women.
The exhibition of fifteen large-scale oil paintings depicts icons of empowerment, leadership and liberation. The pieces pay tribute to the women’s achievements, recognizing their inspiring work, their creativity and their resilience despite past injustice.
“For Women Who Roar pays tribute to game-changing, trail-blazing, female leaders through true and honest portraiture. Portraits that capture the unique essence, power and accomplishments of each woman at its purest… no shocks, no gimmicks, no nudity – just reverence,” says Shana Wilson.
Edmonton’s Jame Salé, as well as Gloria Steinem, Dorothy Pitman Hughes, Anita Hill and Dr. Christine Blasey Ford are just a few of Wilson’s subjects. Stunningly rendered, the women look out at the viewer, evoking admiration and awe. Wilson presents more than a striking likeness and nuanced expressions. She breathes life and history into each painting.
“Wilson has been painting portraits for over 20 years. Her work is stunning and meticulous. She has the incredible ability to capture an authentic likeness, introducing us to dynamic, complex and whole women.” says Emily Baker, Curator of the Art Gallery of St. Albert. “We are thrilled to bring this impressive exhibition to the community in 2022.”
Shana Wilson’s paintings have graced the cover of Time Magazine – twice! This the public’s opportunity to see some of her latest work in person.
