Yvonne Mullock, "Gift-Love North/Wall Glove Hand," 2019
Yvonne Mullock’s new work, Gift-Love uses utopic fashion principles to explore ideas of intimacy, touch, care and connection through textiles. The glove is a monumental token of the artist’s affection meant for loved ones and strangers alike. Gloves were once given as gifts to lovers as pledges of affection and devotion. As a gift, the glove protects, warms and comforts even when one’s lover is absent.
Gift-Love takes its name from this bygone poetic custom and suggests an imagined etymology for a useful and sometimes flamboyant accessory. Made from sumptuous fabric, the glove/hand references the artist’s hand, the primary tool she used to construct it. Not only is this a playful reminder of the author as maker, but also serves as a powerful trope of devotion and healing.
Organized by the Art Gallery of Alberta. Curated by Lindsey Sharman. Presented by Capital Powered Art, an exhibition series sponsored by Capital Power Corporation.
