The Leighton Art Centre will bring together artists in conversation with curators about the future of landscape as a central theme in Canadian contemporary art. The public panels will explore landscape in contemporary art focusing on media “beyond” painting – video/new media, photography, and installation. A conversation on the relevance of painting within this broader context will start things off. The Leighton Art Centre Executive Director, Tony Luppino, will introduce each subject and moderate discussion between artists and curators and encourage public discussion and participation in the conversations.
Featuring artists: David Janzen, Colin Smith, Peter Von Tiesenhausen*
Curators: Jeffrey Spaulding (MOCA Calgary), Catherine Crowston, (Art Gallery of Alberta) and Wayne Baerwaldt ( Illingworth Kerr Gallery, ACAD)

The Leighton Art Centre brings creative expression and artistic engagement alive for diverse communities in Calgary and surrounding rural areas. Artist and architect A. C. Leighton was a mentor to Alberta’s most celebrated artists from Walter Phillips, H.G. Glyde and Maxwell Bates to Marion Nicholl. The Centre, created by artist Barbara Leighton in 1974, seeks to bring that creative nurturing to a broad public at a high level of artistic expression. The Centre sits on an 85 acre Foothills promontory overlooking the Rocky Mountains. for driving directions please visit our website.
