Art Works Gallery would like to commemorate distinguished Canadian Artist- Robert Florian's B.C. landscape paintings, as well as his brand new and adventurous abstracts. Robert Florian’s paintings couple the bold and serene qualities of British Columbia’s backcountry. Untamed forests and calm waters are captured with an impressionistic application of both vivid and subdued colours. Florian’s keen eye for observation and his innate sense of design are key elements in producing his works.
The artist vows, “The most important aspect to the process of painting begins with looking closely at our surroundings and absorbing everything it has to offer....
The quest to explore different avenues of expressing myself in art has increasingly become more of a need rather than just a simple desire. The process of change with my art unquestionably has its own momentum. I now feel compelled to strip away the limitations of the visual form and allow the influences of both postmodern progressive jazz, coupled with mid century abstract expressionism to play a larger role and allow me to create abstract works, while at the same time fulfilling my need to capture the diversity and beauty of the rugged Canadian landscapes.
During the last couple of years, I have found urban elements both here in Canada and in my travels through Europe that hold more of an appeal to me. When viewed more closely, I have found they share similar abstract attributes to those that are present in nature.
I have been busy exploring and experimenting with some of these new found urban elements and whether it is simple torn posters, or barrier posts laden with rust along with scrapes of color left behind by careless drivers, I feel they will eventually flow together and form a bond with my landscapes. My hope is that my canvases will allow the audience to become more aware of their surroundings through a portrayal of the visual content in expressive abstract form and color.
Now that I am faced with two styles of art that are so influential to me, I feel their juxtaposition is akin to music, where one sounds like a ballad or a beloved standard tune, and the other like improvised jazz that transports you to another level that’s free and progressive. In time, these styles may merge but for now I paint with no boundaries.”
